Description
The 3 species of Shrew genus Crocidura inhabiting the Southeastern corner of Europe.
Although superficially similar to mice, shrews are voracious insectivores, the fierce tigers of the microworld of the forest floor. They live a hectic life, always on the hunt for protein, trying to satisfy their tiny bodies' high energy consumption. Their only defense against bigger enemies is their foul-smelling gland on their sides, making them distastful to many predators.
Illustrated are the Bicolored White-toothed Shrew (C. leucodon), the Lesser White-toothed Shrew (C. suaveolens) and the rare and endemic Cretan Shrew (C. zimmermanni).
Intrestingly, and in contrast to what was said before, 'suaveolens' means 'sweet-smelling'.
